Tamron Unveils a 55X Ultra High Magnification Zoom Lens with Built-in Vibration Compensation (VC) for Lens-Integrated Surveillance Cameras with Megapixel Capability

Tamron Co., Ltd. Headquarters, Saitama City, Japan: President and CEO Morio Ono has officially announced the development of a 55X ultra-high-magnification zoom lens with a built-in Vibration Compensation mechanism (VC)specifically designed for lens-integrated surveillance cameras with megapixel capability.

Development Concept

The market for ultra high magnification zoom lenses has so far been limited to specialized security applications such as border monitoring and surveillance at airports, harbors and coastal areas. Until now virtually all the lenses available in this category have been bulky, heavy and costly due primarily to their large support systems including housings and camera platforms. In addition, they have been susceptible to image blurring at the ultra-telephoto settings. For these reasons, they have not successfully penetrated new markets, even where telephoto surveillance applications are advantageous, such as at large-scale commercial establishments and for highway monitoring.

To solve these problems and to promote the wider adoption of ultra high magnification zoom capability, in 2009 Tamron announced the development of an ultra compact 55X zoom lens for VGA image quality, equipped with a Vibration Compensation mechanism. Since then, wherever Tamron has exhibited at trade shows around the world and engaged in marketing efforts among camera manufacturers that represent the users of such lenses, the company has received strong feedback urging it to expand this product category. The result is an innovative new lens designed to be fully compatible with the latest megapixel cameras and to achieve unprecedented ultra telephoto capabilities at high resolution. By conducting a thoroughgoing review of its optical design and implementing the latest technology, Tamron has succeeded in creating this new 55X ultra high magnification zoom lens that delivers megapixel, high-definition image quality. In addition, Tamron has been able to build in its acclaimed proprietary optical Vibration Compensation mechanism (VC) while maintaining an ultra compact form factor. Tamron is therefore pleased to announce what is believed to be the first in a new generation of high performance ultra high magnification zoom lenses aimed at the expanding security/surveillance market.

Application Examples

  • ・ Sports stadiums and other large-scale amusement facilities
  • ・ Large-scale industrial complexes (oil plants, power plants, etc.)
  • ・ Wide-area facilities such as airports, harbors and so on
  • ・ Highway traffic monitoring
  • ・ Data collection cameras for weather forecasting and other scientific applications
  • ・ Fixed-point observation (volcanoes, rivers and other natural phenomena)

Main Features

  • 1. Megapixel capability with HD 720p ultra high image quality
The XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens achieves ultra-high resolution and high image quality
  • 2. Supports the 1/3-inch format that is standard for security cameras
  • 3. Attains an ultra-high magnification ratio of 55X with a focal length range of 6 to 330 mm
The focal length of 330 mm on the ultra-telephoto end is equivalent to 2,380 mm ultra-telephoto when converted to the 35 mm camera format!
  • 4. Delivers stabilized high quality images thanks to the optical Vibration Compensation mechanism
The lens uses Tamron's tri-axial proprietary VC technology that provides superior imaging performance and is sufficiently robust for demanding security applications.
