Top Ten Do's & Don'ts for photographing Children

  • Do be patient
  • Don't be afraid to get close up. Many of my successful images of children are close intimate portraits.
  • Don't be afraid to shoot a lot. Because children often do not stay still or depending on the age (take direction). Take a lot of images. You'll be amazed at the number of expressions that a child goes through in the course of 5 minutes.
  • Do involve the child in the process. There have been a number of instances where I'll hand a child the camera and let them take a picture of their parent or me. This works well with some children who are "camera shy". When they feel involved they are usually more apt to cooperate.
  • Do shoot children where they feel comfortable. If you have the opportunity to photograph children in their home or a local park that they are used to, they are usually apt to act natural.
  • Kid's like to play. Do take some time to play with them and they'll cooperate.
  • Children are active. Don't be afraid to shoot them running or playing. At first you may not always get the shot you want, but you will get better at following the action. Using panning techniques sometimes helps with this. If you are using an SLR camera, set your camera's focus to Ai-servo or continuous focus. This will keep the focus on the subject as they move.
  • Don't be afraid to use flash outside. This helps, especially in the middle of the day when lighting conditions can be harsh.
  • Do experiment with different lenses. Try using a wide angle to incorporate the environment into the image or try a nice tight portrait with a longer lens.
  • Do try shooting sequences of pictures. You can use them to make nice collages.
