Top Ten Do's & Don'ts for Studio Portrait Photography

  • DO remember the Prime Directive: “A picture is of somebody, but a portrait is about somebody.” DON’T take your responsibility lightly.
  • DO Plan Ahead – DON’T get stuck just in the plan.
  • DO make a nurturing atmosphere for both subject and self – music soothes all beats.
  • DO create a repeatable workflow to let the mind focus on the subject.
  • DO take time to make the experience special for the client.
  • DO put yourself in the mindset of the subject – be patient.
  • DO pay attention to details –flatter.
  • DO tell a story; DON’T just make a map of a face.
  • DO (at the end) experiment.
  • DON’T take the whole thing for granted – this is all pretty cool ya know…
