Telephoto Vari-Focal Lens Compatible with Mega-Pixel Resolution and NIR (Near-IR) Bandwidth
1/2.7” 5-55mm F/1.6 (Model: M13VG555IR)
June 24, 2019, Saitama, Japan - Tamron CO., Ltd. (President &CEO: Shiro Ajisaka; Headquarters: Saitama City, Japan), a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the market launch of a Telephoto Vari-Focal Lens (Model: M13VG555IR) compatible with mega-pixel resolution and NIR bandwidth.
Tamron has released a 1/3” 5-50mm F/1.6 lens (Model: M13VG550IR) for a wide variety of applications including city/street and traffic/vehicle surveillance. The current 5-50mm lens has enjoyed high valuation in the market as a standard Telephoto Vari-Focal lens with excellent high-fidelity and high-sensitivity. However, in the surveillance camera market, 1/3” and 1/2.8” imagers with consistent high-fidelity and high-sensitivity have become a de-facto standard, and a Vari-Focal lens that assures high-fidelity and high-sensitivity in both standard and telephoto ranges is a component mandatory for these imagers. Tamron addresses this need in the market by releasing a new 1/2.7” 5-55mm F/1.6 lens compatible with NIR bandwidth (Model:M13VG555IR).

1. High-Optical Performance Compatible with ‘Mega-Pixel’ Resolution
Use of an aspherical lens element and special LD (Low Dispersion) glass material, combined with state-of-the-art optics design technology, assures unrivalled high-fidelity images compatible with mega-pixel cameras. The F/1.6 aperture assures mega-pixel resolution even under poor illumination.
2. NIR-Compatible Lens Covering a Wide Range of Focal-Length in Telephoto
The new lens covers the commonly-used focal length of 5-55mm. In spite of a compact design, the focal length of 55mm is retained at the telephoto end.
3. High-Fidelity Imaging in NIR Bandwidth
Integration of state-of-the-art optics design, choice of lens glass material, and enhanced engineering precision achieves outstanding improvement in CAS* compensation, NIR performance, and corner resolution, assuring high-fidelity mega-pixel lens performance in day-and-night surveillance. The mega-pixel resolution supported not only in the visible but also in the NIR bandwidth enables corner-to-corner crisp-and-clear imaging of targets even in the night-time when both visible and NIR lights co-exist.
*CAS: Chromatic Aberration and Spherochromatism
4. Reduction of Ghosting and Flare
Backlight performance is substantially improved by employing Tamron’s proprietary multi-coating technology. Use of state-of-the-art simulation and validation of use conditions in various security scenes effectively reduces ghosting and flare to the minimum.
5. Pursuit of Friendly User Utility and High Reliability
In compliance with Tamron’s tradition of quality product development in pursuit of user utility and high reliability, the new lens also incorporates many of Tamron’s accumulated know-hows.
・Compactness designed to fit in a camera housing used in outdoor surveillance
・Large focus rotation angle for easier focusing adjustment
・Mount-slip mechanism to assist quick camera/lens integration in installation
・Employment of highly-reliable automatic iris mechanics
