The defining feature of the 12-20mm F2.8 (Model A084) for full-frame mirrorless cameras is its ultra-wide focal range, starting at a remarkable 12mm. While 14mm or 16mm lenses are wide, the expansive 12mm perspective provides an unparalleled sense of scale. It allows you to emphasize perspective and capture the world with dynamic intensity — ideal for everything from majestic architecture to vast, sweeping landscapes.
Furthermore, the 12-20mm F2.8 maintains a bright F2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. Whether you are shooting star-filled night skies or dimly lit interiors, this lens excels in every environment.
■ Exceptional Optical Performance
The optical design features a sophisticated arrangement of specialized elements, including one XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements. This is further enhanced by one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and three LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements to effectively suppress various aberrations, minimizing peripheral blurring and color fringing.
In particular, it effectively corrects sagittal coma flare, which is a common issue in nightscapes and astrophotography where point light sources appear distorted at the edges of the frame. By maintaining high sharpness from the center to the extreme corners, the 12-20mm F2.8 renders every single point of light with crystalline clarity.

■ Advanced Coating Technologies
● AX (Anti-reflection eXpand) Coating: The 12-20mm F2.8 features AX Coating that achieves a uniform film thickness via vapor deposition across the entire surface of highly curved convex elements. This technology effectively suppresses harmful light, ensuring exceptionally clear and crisp image.
● BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating: The 2nd-generation BBAR-G2 Coating significantly minimizes ghosting and flare, even in challenging backlit conditions. This results in high-contrast, vivid rendering with remarkable pop.
The 12-20mm F2.8 achieves a sophisticated balance between uncompromising image quality and exceptional mobility. Through countless iterations of both optical and mechanical redesign, we have achieved a remarkably compact form factor — measuring just 119.3mm (4.7in) in length and weighing only 570g (20.2oz).1
By fine-tuning individual components at the micron level and conducting exhaustive durability testing, we have ensured that this 12-20mm F2.8 meets the highest standards of strength and reliability. Whether you are trekking up a mountain or setting up for a night under the stars, this lens significantly lightens your load without sacrificing performance.

①Custom Switch / ③Focus Set Button / ⑥Connector Port (USB Type-C):
Used in conjunction with the TAMRON Lens UtilityTM application. These allow you to customize lens functions and assign practical features for both video and still photography, supporting a more versatile shooting experience.
②AF/MF Switch:
AF/MF Switch allows for instantaneous switching between autofocus and manual focus. This intuitive control ensures your shooting rhythm remains uninterrupted.
④MF Lock Switch:
MF Lock Switch disables the focus ring to prevent accidental focus shifts. This is especially critical during long-exposure tasks like astrophotography, where maintaining a precise focus point is vital.
⑤Zoom Lock Switch:
Zoom Lock Switch locks the zoom at either the 12mm wide end or 20mm longer end. This stabilizes your intended composition at these frequently used focal lengths, preventing unintended movement during a shoot. The lock can be quickly disengaged by simply rotating the zoom ring, allowing for a seamless transition to your next shot.
⑦Click ON/OFF Switch:
Click ON/OFF Switch toggles the clicking sound and feel of the aperture/control ring, allowing you to match your operating style to stills or video.
• ON: Provides tactile feedback for each increment, making it easier to select specific settings and enhancing operability for still photography.
• OFF: Enables smooth, silent ring rotation for natural-looking exposure and bokeh transitions during video recording.
⑧Iris Lock Switch (Sony E-mount only):
This Iris Lock Switch locks the aperture ring at the "A" position on the aperture scale, or within the manual range between "F2.8 - F16." This allows you to choose whether to control the aperture via the camera body or the lens ring.
• Locked at "A" (Auto): The aperture is controlled via the camera body.
• Locked within the manual range (F2.8 - F16): The aperture is controlled via the lens ring.
Control Lock Switch (Nikon Z mount only):
Control Lock Switch determines whether settings such as aperture or exposure compensation are adjusted via the camera or the lens ring.
• Camera-side control: Set the switch to ON.
• Lens-side control: Set the switch to OFF.
⑨Aperture Ring (Sony E-mount only):
Aperture ring provides intuitive, tactile control over aperture settings, allowing the photographer's intent to be reflected instantly.
Control Ring (Nikon Z mount only):
Control Ring allows for the custom assignment of functions such as aperture or exposure compensation, ensuring smooth, integrated operation with the camera body.
Featuring the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism, the 12-20mm F2.8 delivers high-speed and high-precision autofocus performance. Its exceptional responsiveness and agility — hallmarks of linear motor technology — ensure you never miss a critical moment.
* Operational sounds may be recorded in video depending on the shooting environment.
The 12-20mm F2.8 maintains exceptional close-range shooting capabilities throughout its zoom range, with an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of just 0.18m (7.1in) at the 12mm wide end and 0.28m (11.1in) at the 20mm longer end. At its closest, you can get as near as 50mm (2in) from the front of the lens to your subject. This allows for powerful, dramatic expressions — capturing the foreground subject with exaggerated scale while sweeping in the vast background for a truly dynamic perspective.
The 12-20mm F2.8 is compatible with the dedicated TAMRON Lens Utility application, allowing you to assign practical functions for both video and still photography directly to the lens. This eliminates the need for external video equipment or previously required complex setups, streamlining your creative workflow and expanding your shooting possibilities.
TAMRON Lens Utility Page >
The 12-20mm F2.8 features a 12-blade diaphragm, meticulously engineered for exquisite light rendering. When shooting near maximum aperture, it produces stunningly smooth, circular bokeh from point light sources. Furthermore, when stopped down for nightscapes and cityscapes, it creates sharp 12-pointed starburst effects, adding a touch of elegance to your image.
The 12-20mm F2.8 introduces "Toned Profile Next," taking TAMRON’s signature "Toned Profile" design philosophy to the next level. The aesthetic has evolved from a "lean and muscular silhouette" into a "mechanical style that resonates with the preferences of modern users." This refined exterior combines a sleek, sophisticated look with the rugged functionality demanded by today's photographers.

The lens mount is equipped with a dedicated rear filter holder, allowing for the use of commercially available sheet-type filters. Users can simply cut a filter sheet to the required size and insert it into the holder for expanded creative control. It is useful for long-exposure photography.
The 12-20mm F2.8 comes with a wrapping cloth to help protect the lens in your bag. The fabric features a self-gripping surface that adheres to itself, allowing you to fold it neatly around the lens to protect it from surface dust and scratches. It is compact and folds down easily when not in use, making it a convenient accessory for transport.
