The 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (Model A065) is the “G2” as 2nd-generation successor to the 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056), a lens that earned widespread acclaim and has been enjoyed by users around the world. The new model keeps its fast F2.8 aperture, now adds TAMRON’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and provides significantly enhanced close-up performance. Even with its new features, the lens remains the world’s smallest and lightest in its class (length: 156.5mm/6.2in, weight: 855g/30.2oz)2. Its 180mm telephoto end allows for a remarkably compact body, setting it apart from bulkier 70-200mm lenses. In addition to offering the highest level of mobility, the optical design has been completely revamped from the 1st-generation model to further enhance its exceptional optical performance. With the 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2, TAMRON has pushed both rendering capabilities and miniaturization to their limits. These advancements amplify the joy of capturing the world around you.

The design of the 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2 has been fully redesigned from the ground up to deliver uncompromising optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. This new model has an optical construction of 20 elements in 15 groups. The precision combination of multiple special lens elements including one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), three LD (Low Dispersion), two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical), and one hybrid aspherical lenses further enhance the correction of chromatic and various other aberrations. Additionally, the BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating suppresses ghosting and flare to enable the crisp and clear rendition of images and to assure high resolving power that captures subjects in minute detail. Another feature is the beautiful, soft bokeh that the fast F2.8 aperture provides, vastly expanding the breadth of expressive possibilities available to you. From snap photography to portraits and landscapes, enjoy a diverse range of shooting in any situation.
To help you fully enjoy its excellent portability, the 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2 is equipped with TAMRON’s proprietary VC image stabilization mechanism. This suppresses camera shake that tends to occur when shooting at the telephoto end or during close focusing for stable shooting results. It's also highly effective when shooting in low-light conditions that often lead to camera shake, like evening and low-light conditions or dimly lit indoor scenes. Moreover, using AI technologies, the lens selects the appropriate compensation characteristics for videography at focal lengths of 100mm or less to powerfully support the inherent optical performance of the lens.
The AF drive of the 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2 continues to employ the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism first introduced in the 1st generation Model A056, inheriting its proven quality and performance. With astoundingly agile performance representing a high mark in TAMRON’s history, this AF system faithfully fulfills the intentions of the photographer with an extraordinary precision of 0.005mm, less than one-tenth the width of a human hair. Furthermore, these precise calculations have been applied to further enhance the tracking performance of moving objects such as vehicles and sports action, ensuring you never miss decisive scenes whether shooting still images or video. In addition, the quietness offered by the linear motor system provides nearly silent performance when using the lens in conditions where noise needs to be minimized.
TAMRON has accepted and overcome the challenge of shortening the MOD so that photographers can enjoy greater freedom when composing images. By optimizing the optical design, close-distance shooting that was possible only with manual focus on the 1st-generation model is now possible with autofocus on the 2nd-generation 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2. Compared with its predecessor Model A056, TAMRON has succeeded in shortening the MOD to 0.3m (11.8in) at the 70mm end and 0.85m (33.5in) at the 180mm end. Plus, the working distance at the 70mm end is as close as 12cm (4.7in). This expands the possibilities for expression with a single lens, allowing you to take another step forward or utilize soft, beautiful bokeh in your shots. In addition, with an outstanding maximum magnification ratio 1:2.6 at the 70mm end, you can create unique and powerful compositions that capture your subject in extreme detail. For example, with a simple zoom, you can transform a chest-up shot into a powerful headshot that captures every emotion.
The 70-180mm F2.8 VC G2 is compatible with the dedicated TAMRON Lens Utility software (for PC and Android™ 3 OS) that was developed in-house by TAMRON.4 TAMRON Lens Utility for mobile is especially useful for outdoor shooting.
This software enables you to assign practical functions5 to the lens for both video and still photography using a PC, smartphone or tablet, eliminating the need for traditional video equipment. Our engineers carefully considered the structure and all key parts right down to the finest details, resulting in an enhanced design that updates both operation and ergonomic considerations. The surface of the lens exterior is shiny and glossy black. Improved abrasion resistance makes the lens harder to scratch and resists fingerprints. The material on the zoom and focus rings are also updated to offer better grip performance with deeper grooves. The smoothly curved, glossy surface of the brand ring creates a dignified appearance with a design that signifies functional beauty and high quality.

Nearly all TAMRON mirrorless lenses have a 67mm filter size. This allows you to use the same filter among a wide range of lenses. PL and ND filters are typically expensive, so sharing saves money. Additionally, this eliminates the need to search for caps with different diameters when switching lenses. All lenses in this series are compact, lightweight and extremely portable, making it easier when carrying multiple lenses at the same time.

The fast G2 trinity, “Daisangen” is complete with the 16-30mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A064) ultra wide-angle zoom, the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A063) standard zoom, and the 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (Model A065) telephoto zoom. Together, these lenses cover the extremely versatile 16mm to 180mm range, making them ideal for virtually any scene. All three lenses share a 67mm filter diameter, ensuring portability and convenience. Even when carried together, their total weight is just 1.8kg (63.5oz),2 minimizing fatigue during extended shoots. Plus, with a constant fast F2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range, they deliver consistent high image quality in any situation and allow pinpoint subject isolation.
Experience the perfect blend of performance and functionality, making professional-level photography more accessible than ever.
What is Daisangen?
The term "Daisangen" originates from the game of mahjong, where it refers to a winning hand formed by collecting three sets of dragon tiles. Inspired from this concept, the Japanese photography industry uses the term "Daisangen lenses" to describe a set of three zoom lenses—a wide-angle, a standard, and a telephoto—all featuring a constant F2.8 aperture throughout their zoom range.
